Today, as we celebrate Earth Day, we reflect on the significant strides Utah has made in preserving our unique natural landscapes and improving the environment for all residents. From the red rocks of our national parks to the air we breathe in our growing urban centers, the State of Utah is committed to leading by example through innovative resource stewardship.
The recently released FY25 Coordinator of Resource Stewardship Annual Report highlights how state agencies are collaborating to “break down silos” and implement best practices for air quality, water conservation, and sustainable growth.
🌬️ Improving Air Quality Through Innovation
Air quality remains a top priority for the state. The Coordinator of Resource Stewardship (CRS) program, housed within the Department of Government Operations, works across all agencies to reduce the government’s environmental impact.
- Cleaner Fleets: As of September 2025, 34.3% of the state’s eligible vehicle fleet consists of advanced technology vehicles, including hybrids and battery-electric models.
- Electric Transition: The Division of Facilities Construction and Management (DFCM) is piloting electric Utility Terrain Vehicles (UTVs) at state campuses and plans to transition to electric lawn equipment to further reduce local emissions.
- Alternative Transport: During National Bike Month in May 2025, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) promoted sustainable commuting by hosting public bike repair booths.
💧 Leading in Water Conservation
In a state as arid as Utah, every drop counts. State facilities are now leading the charge in water-wise management.
- Water-Wise Landscaping: The Taylorsville State Office Building recently implemented a landscape design expected to achieve a 70% water savings by using native plants, crushed rock, and high-efficiency fescue.
- Recognition of Excellence: The Utah Division of Water Resources was honored by the EPA with a 2024 WaterSense Excellence Award for its statewide efforts in promoting water-efficient products and rebate programs.
⚡ Energy Efficiency and Federal Partnerships
Utah is leveraging new federal opportunities to fund clean energy projects that save taxpayer dollars.
- Federal Tax Credits: Through “Elective Pay” provisions, Utah has successfully claimed tax credits for solar arrays and EV charging infrastructure, allowing the state to recover 30% of project costs.
- Building Performance: Retro-commissioning projects at state courthouses have successfully reduced gas consumption by 50% simply by optimizing building automation and mechanical airflow.
🤝 Community and Cross-Agency Collaboration
Stewardship isn’t just about technology; it’s about people working together.
- Declutter Day: In April 2025, the Division of Consumer Protection and the University of Utah helped residents recycle over 22,000 pounds of electronic waste and shred a similar amount of paper to prevent identity theft and environmental contamination.
- Wildlife Support: The Department of Corrections and the Department of Natural Resources partnered to grow and plant sagebrush to support local deer populations, with much of the work completed by incarcerated offenders learning new skills.
Looking Forward
As we look to the future, Utah envisions a state where every agency is empowered to be a leader in environmental stewardship. Whether it’s protecting our world-renowned Dark Skies or implementing lower-emission technologies, we are committed to ensuring a vibrant, healthy future for all Utahns.
